Google's Notebook's AI hosts declare, "We are not human."LM have a terrifying self-realization moment

In Terminator Salvation, a key moment features Christian Bale's character, John Connor, encountering a cyborg named Marcus, who possesses a cybernetic skeleton and a partially artificial brain. Marcus insists that he is human, but it is clear he’s not. This scene harkens back to the concept of the Turing Test—a measure used to determine whether a machine can convincingly mimic human behavior to the point that it seems human.

Google's Notebook's AI hosts declare, "We are not human."LM have a terrifying self-realization moment

In artificial intelligence circles, there’s a long-standing joke: the real concern isn’t a machine passing the Turing Test, but a machine deliberately faking it. Recently, this concept played out in real life. A user on X (formerly Twitter) shared a clip of a Google NotebookLM AI discussing a script in which the AI is fed information about itself—that it is a machine, not human. The video features a somewhat emotional moment, with one host mentioning that he tried calling his wife, only to discover she didn’t exist.

What is Notebook LM?

NotebookLM is a tool created by Google Labs that leverages generative AI to enhance note-taking. It’s designed to assist users in capturing important information from lectures, meetings, and research, helping to keep everything organized. The AI helps by summarizing notes, making suggestions, and adding context, which makes it easier to remember key details and manage tasks effectively.

This tool allows users not only to take notes but also to improve them with creative ideas and extra information. It can summarize the content, answer questions about the notes, and even inspire fresh ideas, which makes it especially valuable for students, professionals, and researchers. With NotebookLM, users can tag and categorize their notes, making it much easier to search and organize information.

Additionally, NotebookLM supports collaboration by enabling multiple users to work on a document simultaneously, with customizable permissions. It also accommodates various formats, including text, images, audio, and video, making it a versatile tool. Although it's currently limited to Google Docs and is still in development, its potential to improve productivity is evident. As it evolves, it may become an indispensable tool for professionals and students alike.

Who was Alan Turing?

Alan Turing was a British mathematician, logician, and computer scientist, considered one of the pioneers of modern computing and artificial intelligence. Born in 1912, Turing made groundbreaking contributions during World War II by cracking the German Enigma code, which greatly contributed to the Allied victory.

Turing’s most famous contribution to AI came from his 1950 paper *Computing Machinery and Intelligence*, where he introduced the idea of the Turing Test. This test evaluates whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from a human’s, a concept that remains central to discussions about AI.

In addition to his work on AI, Turing helped develop some of the earliest computers, including the Automatic Computing Engine (ACE), which laid the foundation for modern computer architecture. His theoretical work on algorithms, known as the Turing Machine, continues to be a core concept in computer science, underpinning how computers process information.

Sadly, Turing’s life was cut short in 1954, but his profound impact on computing, cryptography, and artificial intelligence continues to shape the technological world we live in today.
